From a psychoanalytic point of view, phobias are the specific manifestations of an underlying anxiety neurosis. This is a way of saying that the roots of irrational fears reside in unresolved emotional conflicts. A fear situation or object is said to be an externalization of either an attitude or a fear that is held at an unconscious level.
Simply put, let’s use HS’s sinophobia as an example:
HS has a low opinion of all China pple in general and has a strong tendency to avoid/hate/ridicule them. He represses some or all of his awareness of this tendency because it goes against his superego, ie. his moral self, which is both decent and kind (everyone -> puke please…) However, the ego defense mechanism called projection is at work. Projection is characterised by a tendency to perceive the outer world in terms of repressed, or blocked attitudes
Therefore, he tends to fear China pple because at some secret level of his personality he wishes to be from China.
From the behaviouristic point of view, irrational fears are conditioned emotional reactions. A classical experiment with a child known in psychological literature as Albert provides a basic example. But here, we shall use HS as the example again. (somehow, pple will rem things better if it happens to someone they know)
HS as a child, could have been exposed to numerous pple laughing/commenting that he looks like he’s from China, to be specific, maybe the southern part of China. (or maybe, his babysitter was from China) Then, he had no fear of the China pple, but then, he received a shock in the presence of the China-pple (representing the ‘gong’ as in Albert’s case) and HS would cry… Upon repeated contact with the China pple (or with relatives saying that he was Cheena-looking), he would cry more and try to avoid the China pple. Thus he acquired a conditioned fear of China-pple through association with the shock (watever that might be).
hmmm and i realised i have some social phobia… gotta work on overcoming that!!!
