The Hours

What a film to watch over the CNY… I almost turned suicidal and broke down in tears for no apparent reason… following which I had to stop the movie and resume it a day later. -_-

Oio, stupid self-professed saint! ‘thanks’ for your recommendation!

I suppose the reason why it affected me so much was cuz I could identify with one of the characters… that would be Laura (Julianne Moore). Despite all that perfection and apparent satisfaction, which looked to all like a wonderfully happy family, I do still feel a pervading sense of loneliness. It’s like nothing you ever achieve or do would really matter. After all, we’re all just going to die right? Sometimes I really wonder why I’m doing all this… and I’ve come to realise that the only way I’m going to keep myself alive and striving ahead is if I’m doing it for myself. If I ever decide that I’m living for someone else, or living to contribute to a faceless, meaningless society, or if I’m living just so to attain all the power, glory and monetary comforts, I’d sooner kill myself. YES, we have to live for ourselves!

The character I felt saddest for was Clarissa (Meryl Streep). She was a woman who had a summer relationship with this guy, who later turned gay… (and I mean real gay, like living with a guy partner). Later on, the guy she loved suffered from AIDS, and she continued, painstakingly to stay by his side in order to take care of him. Everything in her live revolved around him. We would wonder, why why why would she voluntarily remain by a guy who gave up her love and became GAY? And why look after a person when she knew that he was going to die… and spend terrible years suffering physical pain and stigma before he passed away? Maybe she really loved him, some might say, but I’m more inclined to say that she needed to feel worthy, to feel needed and to feel like someone’s life depended on her. Hmmm actually it’s not that rare too, I believe so many women out there do so much, in fact, too much, for the ‘weaker sex’.

As for Virginia Woolf, I think she’s a highly intriguing woman… very feminist… very courageous… Do you know how she killed herself? She wore a heavy overcoat, put a stone in her pocket, and forced herself to walk into the cold waters of the river near where she lived. She was a very good swimmer, yet she managed to force herself to die this way… Her method of suicide has been described as ‘gallant’. Anyway, it’s not fair to form an idea of her based on what other people have interpreted, as in the movie and the bonus features within. I think I will borrow a copy of her books to read and try to understand her better through her work. Excerpts from her work were read out in the bonus features, and I really like the way she writes… so poetic and vivid!

“Write a lot of letters to yr family and friends, keep a diary; don’t let a day pass without recording it, whether anything interesting has happened or not. Something interesting happens everyday.”
— Virginia Woolf

Don’t you admire the passion she possesses?

Ah, things to DIE for. (hmm now why do people use ‘die for’? shouldn’t you ‘live’ in order to get these things? heheh… the wonders of the english language!)

Online shopping is indeed great fun! but it’s just as addictive and you run this enormous risk of declaring yourself bankrupt the next morning… so… the key to having fun ’shopping’ online is to shop only at super expensive sites, where the items cost more than what you have in your bank account. haha…

plus, u can always find nice and cheaper versions of the ‘real’ goods in shops around. ;) all you need to know is the style! yay!

Cathy Waterman feather earrings
Actually I’ve seen these feather earrings around in Taka, definitely cost less than a tenth of what they’re selling it over here… hmmm should lurve to get a pair… heheh. i’m indeed the ‘earrings whore’, but dun call me that to the face unless u want me to reset yr nose.

Anaconda Fissure heart pendant
ooooh, caught this at Luxist.com… nice recommendation from the pig. heheh. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the trees in the orthopaedics logo. hmmm… maybe some ortho surgeon could get this for his gf/wife for anniversary eh? hahaha…

Kazuko web cuff
Gorgeous! That’s why i lurve jap-style stuff… they’re elegant, fragile and feminine!!!

once i graduate, i will need to learn how to 避年 heh.

This year’s count:

0 — No. of people who asked me if i had a boyfriend (i suppose i don’t look like the type who can have a boyfriend… or they’re just waiting for me to graduate… which brings me back to point one)

0 — No. of times i felt suicidal (i’m going to get the self-proclaimed-saint who caused me all that unnecessary misery…)

1 — No. of people seeking advice on CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) -> who asked abt at least 3 items i dunno anything of.

2 — No. of people who showed me their medications (yay! i suppose no one wants to be reminded of being sick in the new year period!)

3 — No. of times i got asked which speciality i intend to go to (to which i gleefully answered psychiatry and threw in Woodbridge as my ideal working environment… and looked at their shell-shocked faces… muahahaha)

4 — No. of times i got asked which yr of school i’m at (they got tired of asking year after year after year… n i never seem to graduate)

5 — No. of times i got called or people taught they kids to call me auntie. FREAK! all those kids are learning how to talk now!

i suppose this year’s new year wasn’t all that bad… aside from the paltry amount received, the fact that my fave relatives weren’t around and the fact that i feel so old when i see all those babies popping out my cousins so fast you can’t even say ‘pseudohypoparathyroidism’! -_-

one day more before school starts again and i’m feeling so stressed so stressed so stressed…

okay, reunion dinner’s always so pathetic. it’s more like an intra-familial reunion dinner. u know, like my parents, my bro and myself kinda thing, since we hardly eat at the same table.

we have weird dining habits at home.

this yr, we had reunion dinner with my eldest auntie! and we had it at Esmirada Bar and Grill, at the branch at Orchard Hotel. The other branch is at CHIJMES.

Esmirada Bar & Grill

more pictures…

entrance to toilet
Here’s to the toilet, which is just as dark as the rest of the place…

wine cellar
Cool stash of wine! woooh!

full house
FULL HOUSE! must make your bookings!

and the FOOD… it’s gorgeous!

We had this garlic bread… and a lamb couscous, mixed grill and paella española.

garlic bread
I just had to have this picture… what a phallic symbol, rite? Very crunchy.

the paella was as i remember, just like the one at CHIJMES, i hereby proclaim that they’ve got one of the nicest paella i’ve tried in singapore so far. i wonder how it’ll taste like in spain?

Couscous, for those who are not aware, is a food which consists of grains made from semolina, traditionally served under a meat or egetable stew. It is the primary staple food throughout North Africa. The stew was really really goooooood! Even my aunt, who is an extremely fussy eater, loved it!

The mixed grill, pegged at SGD80 is super not worth it! it’s supposed to be a platter for 2, but the portion is really small… it’s more worth your money to get two separate dishes, preferably one of their kebabs. Their kebabs are served pipping hot, still on the skewers, right after they finish grilling it. yum yum!

The music they play there is like stuff from ‘Gypsy Kings’, ‘Los Gitanos’ that type… spanish-gypsy music. The highlight of that night, they played a Greek song, you now those they play at weddings or special events very interative with all the customers and then…. here’s the best part, WE STARTED SMASHING PLATES!!! so cool rite? it felt soooo goood! Apparently it’s a Greek tradition to smash plates at special occasions. yay so fun!

After dinner we adjourned to River Cafe Coffee Garden for well… coffee.. the coffee there sux big time! Not hot enough. and just tastes like the 2-in-1 coffee u get outsdie. :S At least the place had a good ambience and a wonderful singer. ahhhhh i lurve to go to lounges where they have live performances!!!

It’s an arty-sort of film, with remarkable cinematographical concepts. It’s like a cross between a romance-comedy and one of those art films. The story is about a couple, who are as unlike each other as you can ever get. Joel (Jim Carrey) does a fantastic job of portraying a lost, sad, serious, artistic, down-to-earth guy who falls in love with Clementine (Kate Winslet with varying garish hair colours), a lively, idealistic, castle-in-the-clouds, confused, messed up yet free-spirited girl. One day Clementine undergoes a procedure to completely erase Joel from her life, leaving Joel highly puzzled and miserable indeed. When Joel finds out what she’d done, he decides to do the same. However, halfway through the procedure, he comes to realise that he still loves her, despite all that she is (or rather, is not), and thinks of creative ways and means to keep her alive in his memory.

The movie shuttles between real-life, past, present and Joel’s memories. Each transition smooth, yet startling at the same time. It is indeed a good film, though, I believe it would have been a great film if the actors (both of them) could add a greater myriad of emotions to their faces.

I think the crux of the film is simply - WOULD YOU RATHER ESCAPE OR FACE UP TO REALITY?

I hardly think that erasing a memory from your life, just because it is too painful a memory is something that we should do. If it were some awful memory like seeing a crazed murderer hack down yr family into pieces, or being raped, or some kind of incident that would almost definitely cause major psychological trauma to you, then an erasure could be justified. If not, then seeking an erasure of an unpleasant memory is simply an ‘easy way out’. We do not grow from running away from our problems, we grow from lessons learnt from them, no matter how unpleasant it might be.

Often, I find myself wondering… If I could have the power to go back into time and change things, would I have said something different? Would I have done something else? Or would I have chosen a different path? Such that I would then be able to avoid some unpleasant incident, some painful accident, or simply, just to avoid friction with someone… Out of those numerous times I’ve thought of this, I’ve only had a ‘yes’ once. Most other times, I’m really not willing to change things that have already happened, or maybe it could be ‘cos I’m just too lazy and too bored to go over things again. ;) Without these occurences, I would never have been what I am today.

Another point that the movie brought out was, in times when we are in pain, try to remember the good times. It’s really typical… in the early days when you’ve just broken up with your ’significant other’, you are just so gloomy and sad and all that crappy feeling just overwhelms you… the quarrels, the final parting words, the phrases that hurt and those that cut most deeply keep replaying in your mind. Perhaps gradually, these wounds might heal and you revert back to your old self (but of course with some scars…) but the healing could go better and faster if you’d just concentrated on the good times.

I wouldn’t give up all the memories I have of a person, whether they were good or bad, just so that I would be free from the pain of the bad ones. It’s NOT worth it!

guys are not supposed to read this entry unless:
1. u r a transvestite
2. u r post-sex change
3. u want to buy me a lipstick hehe…
4. u wish to understand why women can have so many sticks of various shades of pink/peach/red… actually no need to waste time lah, just say ‘nice’, ‘gorgeous’ and ‘yes’ to everything we ask u and u shld be fine… we’re prob too complex for u guys, so just agree with us can! hahaha…

i’m so sian i decided to play with my lipsticks. but i only have 3… so… not so much fun… want to see a pic?

here goes ->
lipstick
(from left to right: red earth PK 391 - pls dun get that, it’s looks v metallic pink after some time… dunno y… thankfully it was a gift; Za 011 - my first lipstick, um… was a gift too, forgot from whom; Fasio powder pink 871 - current fave! not in picture: maybelline watershine gloss baby pink and pink punch!)

finally got a lip brush. haha which is like so duh. i should have gotten it ages ago. it’s especially gd for pple who have intention tremor, or just a high frequency coarse resting tremor… or for pple like mua who attempt to put on make up while walking…or in a car.

so here’s how you get a whole new gorgeous set of lips with a lip brush. haha…

if u have like dry, chapped lips, pls put some balm ok…

first, use the lip brush to outline yr lips… some pple say u shld use a darker colour than u intend to put on to define the outlines… but it’s really up to u.

here’s what i did:
1. outline lips with fasio powder pink 871
2. fill in central area with Za 011
3. slick on maybelline watershine gloss baby pink (more like colourless)

and tadaaa… nice lips! and these brands don’t cost too much anyway.

read somewhere abt lipstick…
apparently, using 2 colours adds more omph. haha… especially if u highlight the central areas with a darker shade… -> think geisha highlighting the smallness of the mouth. lolz… i think it makes yr lips look fuller…

seems like gloss and watershine is in now… haha juicy lips. lolz… i dunno y, it makes me think of herpes!

blah blah blah… typing such trash makes me so tired. shall go watch some highly recommended movies… they’d better be good… or else…

Through the pages...January 24, 2006 7:05 pm

‘The Big Over Easy’ is the latest book written by Jasper Fforde, well-known for his Thursday Next series. In this new series, he bases his story on Detective Jack Spratt and his second-in-command, Mary Mary of the Nursery Crime Division. Yeap, nursery crimes… they deal with crimes such as:
- Bo Peep reporting losing another sheep…
- who pushed Humpty Dumpty over the wall? And interestingly, the big egg’s full name is: Humperdinck Jehoshaphat Aloysius Stuyvesant van Dumpty. hohoho…
- the GingerBreadman, a serial killer who rips his victims limb by limb apart and is now detained in the secure wing of the incurably unhinged at the St. Cerebellum asylum
- did the Wolff attempt to break into the 3 pigs’ house? or did the 3 pigs’ actually plan to boil Mr. Wolff by placing a huge cauldron of water under the chimney… which took up to 6 hours to boil?

Here’s an excerpt (lets you have a taste of the author’s writing):

FLAUTIST’S SON JAILED FOR PIG-STEALING. Tom Thomm, son of Reading Philharmonic’s noted solo flautist, was finally convicted of serial pig theft yesterday. ‘I don’t know what comes over me,’ said Thomm when asked to account for his actions, ‘I just see a pig, this pink veil falls over my eyes and next thing I know I’ve grabbed it and I’m off. I don’t even like pork - I’m a vegetarian.’ The judge heard that Thomm had been a serial pig stealer for some years, having grabbed a total of 2,341 porkers since he was twelve. In his summing-up, Mr Justice Cutlett told him: ‘Despite numerous court orders to attend compulsive behaviour disorder realignment sessions, you are still unable to control your urges. I have no choice but to detain you for two years.’ Several pigs who attended court were said to be ‘overjoyed at the outcome’.

And another one! I lurve how creative the author is!

NAIL SOUP FAD SPREADS. The popularity of Nail Soup continues to spread across Reading this week with the news that Smileyburger has added ‘Nailburger’ to its product list and the makers of Cup-a-soup, Pot Noodle and Walker’s Crisps are introducing ‘Nail flavour’ to their product lines. The tasty and healthy concoction that consists only of a nail and hot water has baffled nutritionists and scientists for some months. ‘It’s very odd, ‘ declared a leading food expert yesterday, ‘but the nutritional benefits of nail soup are indisputable - yet a nail and hot water should be no more nutritious than hot water with a nail in it - which isn’t nutritious at all. I have to admit it’s got us stumped.’ Despite the confusion of the scientific community, the tasty snack continues to find favour with young and old alike, many of whom have improved upon the original recipe with a few garnishings of their own such as salt, pepper, potatoes, cabbages, leeks, carrots, lentils and chopped bacon.

now, someone should recomment me more of such creative writings!

any suggestions?
