‘lost in a good book’ by jasper fforde
Yay, finished the second book by Jasper Fforde! I dunno how this guy gets his ideas, they sort of parallel the real world, yet the ideas still seem so new to me!
For eg. in books, they’ve got a jurisfiction which parallels the laws and policing we have in the real world. or… in literature, they have footernotephones, which parallel the mobiles we all own these days. I think the idea of communicating by footnotes is hilarious! The um… idea or theme of his story is similar to Harry Potter, where there are two worlds, one ‘muggle’ and one magical; in Fforde’s books, there are two worlds too, one real (called the ‘Outlander’… I think he concocted this word from ‘outlandish’) and the ‘book’ world.
This sequel of the highly-acclaimed ‘The Eyre Affair’ again features Thursday Next, a literary detective. This time round, she investigates the appearance of Cardenio, thought to be one of Shakespeare’s lost plays, struggles against Goliath corporation (think Microsoft?) who eradicates her husband (they just erased him out of everyone’s memories such that only Thursday could remember his existence), becomes an apprentice under Miss Havisham (Great Expectations) and serves for jurisfiction. All this and she still has time to save the world with her father! Packed with adventures, it’s bound to marvel you at every turn and leave you gasping for more…
Heheh… it’s so hard to describe how refreshing this book has been!
Now on to ‘The Well of Lost Plots’…
