shld we just keep our mouths shut?
‘we’re living such politically-correct lives’ a friend recently blogged. how true it is! who would want to go through life making enemies and causing unhappiness when we could just swallow it and shove it into the depths of our hearts and then just behave like nothing happened?
in the short-term, i think that works out. but i doubt it’s something we can do all our lives.
but of course we can’t possibly go around scolding people for irritating us. (i’m sure they have good reason too) because apart from just making our lives difficult for ourselves, we’re only creating more unhappiness around us.
and that’s when a good friend who can listen to all your rantings and make appropriate hmmms and ‘oh my god’ and ‘wat a b*tch/j*rk’ can really help to take away all your anger.
anyway here’re my working principles:
1. if i have a misunderstanding with a person who matters, i would definitely want to clear it up properly. because i don’t wish the friendship to be marred unnecessarily.
i believe that between friends we should be honest (but tactful) instead of just letting things get shoved into the depths… (cuz one day the underground volcano will surely explode)
2. if you mean nothing to me, i wouldn’t care about clearing up watever misunderstanding with you.
3. if you are just a friend (as in i haven’t really decided how good a friendship we could form), i’ll probably just live and let live… shove any conflict into KIV tray. after all, i couldn’t possibly risk any basic friendship by kicking up a fuss over stuff.
4. if you used to be a person in category 1, but you did something totally awful that betrayed all that camaderie, i will adopt a ’superficial friend’, ‘occasional careful helper’ and ‘indifferent deep down’ attitude towards you.
