How to create a box office hit:
Method 1:
1. Import Asian female actor to Hollywood, preferably one who does not speak with American/British accent.
2. Add in a few hot shot Hollywood natives
3. A dash of omph with some flashing cinematography, Titanic-like music, and a not-necessarily brilliant plot.
Method 2:
1. Import an Asian story/Asian background plot to Hollywood.
2. Shoot it in Asia, with everyone speaking English.
NB: Creates hit only in non-Asian countries.
Method 3:
1. European films, shot in Europe.
2. Non-English
3. Not well-known actors, unless it’s Audrey Tantou
4. Lots of quiet moments, brooding, simple but powerful sentences
5. Have a quiet plot, nothing too flashy, sad music.
Method 4:
1. Take a book that’s got raving reviews.
2. Make a movie out of it.
NB: Make sure the author sanctions your plot.
How to create a miss:
1. Making a sequel of a movie, any movie, is associated with an 80% chance of creating a miss.
2. See ‘Final Destination’, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ and ‘Scream’ for reference.
3. Taking an Asian-produced movie and westernising it.
4. Have too many subplots
5. Precipitous endings.
