Spacefan really watches all the cool shows! After her review of the Monk TV Series, I decided somehow, I had to lay my hands upon it! And thanks to the really cool people downstairs, I’ve managed to borrow it! YAY!
So I spent some time over this weekend ‘revising psychiatry’. As those who’ve watched Monk already should know, Adrian Monk is a detective who has OCD and lots of phobias. All this probably developed after he lost his beloved wife in a car bomb incident. Anyway, just watch the first 10min of the first episode to see what OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) really is like! (btw, when I did psychmed short posting, they used a clip fr Monk to illustrate OCD! damn cool!)
Check out the site here!
Anyway, I really wish to have his skills of observation and deduction. He’s almost like… psychic!?!? He’s so smart! But I think that his OCD is this trade-off. Only people who obsess over such details would be able to have almost photographic memory, and to make connections from things so distant and vaguely-related that the majority of us would just brush it aside… haha…
Anyway, here’s to share some of the obsessions and compulsions that I have…
1. I have a standard bedtime ritual, made up of 2s and 3s and complete darkness… and of cuz, the monster under my bed.
2. I double/triple check that I’ve locked the gate when I come home.
3. I wash any fruit where the skin is going to be eaten, twice, with soap (yes to the horror of some friends, who feel that fruits should never be washed with soap!)
4. I obsess over grammar so much that sometimes, I can’t stop it but have to correct people’s grammar on blogs, or worse, my friends when they’re speaking…
5. I can’t help closing cupboard doors in prep rooms and along some hospitals’ walkways when they’re not closed properly! (to the amusement of my cg mates…)
Anyway, I believe that we’re all not created to be perfect beings. I think everyone, no matter how ‘perfect’ they are in others’ eyes, has some part of themselves that they loathe and wish to change. But, it’s just the way we are. We just have to learn to capitalise on our strengths so that they overshadow the parts we hate, and that we should learn that we can be happy, even if we’re not perfect.
Though of course, if you were a perfectionist (and I know many), we would have a hard time convincing ourselves of that…
Which, is why, you should ‘revise psychiatry’ with Monk, they have useful tips to help you ‘focus on the big picture’ ;)
