MBBS examiners (part V): the ‘feeling’ one
This is a really nice, smiley examiner that you wouldn’t mind working with, but you might not want to meet during the exams… Coz, you might just not get beyond the ‘introduce yourself to the patient’ part…
MS: My patient is Mr Ahmad, a 45-year old…
Examiner: How do you know your patient is Mr Ahmad? Did you ask him?
MS: Because it’s written on the board by his bedside and he responded when I called him Mr Ahmad…
Examiner: But his full name is Ahmad Ismail Muhammad (or it could be Lee Ming Tat Peter), how would you know if he wants to be called Ahmad, Ismail or Muhammad? (or for that matter, Lee, Ming Tat, or just Peter)
MS: Er…
Examiner: Did you ask him what he wishes to be called?
MS: Er…
Examiner: Don’t ‘Er’, ask him now…
MS: Hi, Sir, how do you want me to address you?
Patient: Er, anything la… just Ahmad.
MS: Ok, thanks. My patient is Ahmad, a 45-year old…
Recommended approach: Actually I don’t think this will happen to us in the exams unless the examiner is really really pissed off with your lack of manners or maybe you had this arrogant smirk on yr face and he just wanted to ‘tekan’ you a bit… No idea… anyone experienced this before?
